Bread Storage 101 - Tips For Keeping Your Bread Fresh

One of the most frequently asked questions we get at the shop is, what’s the best way to store my bread at home? While there’s no one “right” answer, we've definitely picked up a few tips over the years.

First and foremost, the best thing you can do to keep your bread fresh longer is to slice it as you go. The exterior crust of a loaf acts as a barrier, keeping air out and moisture in. We highly recommend using a good serrated knife (we sell an affordable option in the shop) - it makes the job way easier.

As for the best way to store your loaf, there are plenty of great options. Our favorite is Bee’s Wrap (a large piece of canvas coated in beeswax, which we also sell in the shop) or a waxed canvas bread bag because they’re plastic-free, reusable, and the stickiness of beeswax creates a nice seal when the edges are pressed together. Other good options include a grocery store plastic produce bag, a large Tupperware container, or even an enamel Dutch oven with a lid - feel free to experiment with what you already have in your kitchen! If you're using a large container, try placing the partial loaf cut-side down with the exposed interior facing the bottom as an extra defense against air.

We store our bread right on the counter and don't recommend refrigerating it, as the fridge can make the loaf gummy over time. We’re also not fans of large ziplock bags, the plastic is too heavy and can create a humid environment that promotes condensation and mold. If you really want to use a ziplock, try leaving it slightly open to allow for a small transfer of air.
